Whether you've never picked up a needle before or you're returning to needlepoint after many years, this beginner-friendly class is designed to help you feel comfortable from your very first stitch. Our instructors guide you through each step at a relaxed pace, making it easy to learn a new hobby while enjoying a welcoming community of fellow stitchers.

During class, we'll help you select a beginner-friendly needlepoint canvas that matches your style and skill level. You'll learn about needlepoint canvases, threads, needles, and essential tools, along with the foundational techniques needed to start your first project with confidence.

One of the things that makes needlepoint so enjoyable is that there isn't just one "right" way to stitch. We'll introduce several techniques and best practices while encouraging you to discover the approach that feels most natural for you.

Your class fee is applied as store credit toward the canvas and threads you choose during class, allowing you to leave with everything you need to continue stitching at home.

First Stitch is offered every other week with alternating afternoon and evening sessions, making it easy to find a class that fits your schedule.

Registration & Cancellation Policy

Please register for your preferred date and time in advance, as seating is limited.

Cancellations made at least 48 hours before the start of First Stitch are eligible for a full refund. We will offer the available seat to stitchers on our waitlist. Refunds cannot be provided for cancellations made less than 48 hours before the event.

Location & Directions

You’ll find The Pepper Pot inside the historic Ice House Mall in Barrington, Illinois. Public parking is available throughout the property.

The nearest entrance is off Applebee Street, near Jewel-Osco. Enter through the double glass doors beneath the brick arch, then head down the steps or ramp, we’re on the left. You’ll see signage along Lake-Cook Road and inside the building to guide you.

Yes! First Stitch was created specifically for people who have never tried needlepoint before or have never received needlepoint guidance. No previous stitching experience is required, and we'll guide you through every step.

Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn something new. If you use reading glasses for close-up work, we recommend bringing them. We'll help you select your beginner needlepoint canvas, threads, and any tools you'll need during class.

We also recommend bringing water or your favorite beverage. Wine is available for purchase by the bottle. If you choose to bring your own wine, a $30 corkage fee applies to any bottles consumed on the premises.

First Stitch is designed for complete beginners, so no prior needlepoint experience is necessary. Our instructors will guide you through choosing your first project, understanding your canvas and threads, and learning the foundational stitches and techniques needed to begin stitching with confidence.

Do I need to bring my own needlepoint supplies?

No. During class, we'll help you select the perfect beginner project, and your class fee will be applied as store credit toward the canvas and threads you choose. We'll also help you select any tools you may need.

What is included with the class fee?

Your class fee is applied as store credit toward the purchase of your needlepoint canvas and threads, allowing you to choose a project you'll truly enjoy stitching.

What should I bring to Mahjong Open Play?

Players should bring their current National Mahjong League (NMJL) card and be ready for an enjoyable afternoon or evening of American Mahjong. All Mahjong tables, tiles, racks, and game supplies are provided by The Pepper Pot.

We recommend bringing reading glasses if you use them, as well as water or any beverage you prefer. Wine is available for purchase on-site by the bottle. If you choose to bring your own wine, a $30 corkage fee applies for any bottles consumed on the premises.

Come with a willingness to learn, practice, and meet fellow Mahjong players. Many participants attend on their own and quickly become part of our welcoming Mahjong community.

Mahjong Open Play is a great opportunity to sharpen your skills, gain confidence with the NMJL card, and enjoy regular Mahjong games with players from Barrington, Lake Zurich, Palatine, Arlington Heights, and surrounding Chicago suburbs.

Every project is different depending on its size and complexity. During class, we'll help you choose a canvas that's appropriate for your experience level and discuss what to expect as you complete your first project.

Can I continue taking classes after First Stitch?

Absolutely. Many students continue attending stitching groups, workshops, and specialty classes at The Pepper Pot after completing their first project.  Sip and Stitch and Open Stitch are also great, no-cost events where you can ask questions and receive feedback on your work in progress (WIP). Our instructors are always happy to help you continue developing your needlepoint skills.
