Who Can Attend Mahjong Open Play?

All skill levels are welcome. Our Open Play sessions are designed for players who already understand the fundamentals of American Mahjong. To participate, players should be able to:

Identify all Mahjong tiles by name
Understand the basic rules of American Mahjong
Read the current National Mahjong League (NMJL) card without assistance
Follow the cadence and flow of the game independently

Our instructors are present during Open Play to answer questions, guide play, and help players gain confidence. However, Open Play is not intended as a beginner Mahjong class. If you have never played before, played online, only played a couple of times, or a significant amout of time has elapsed since your beginner lessons, we recommend starting with one of The Pepper Pot's Tile by Tile Mahjong Lessons before joining Open Play or private small group lessons. While YouTube is a great learning tool, real play experience is required. If you'd like additional support during gameplay, a Guided Play option is also available.

Weekly Mahjong in Barrington

Mahjong Open Play is held every Tuesday and Thursday at The Pepper Pot with two convenient sessions:

Morning Session: Thursday 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Daytime Session: Tuesday 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Evening Session: Tuesday 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Each Open Play session is limited to 20 players to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Tables are organized by skill level whenever possible, creating engaging games for everyone attending.

Registration & Cancellation Policy

Please register for your preferred date and time in advance, as seating is limited.

Cancellations made at least 48 hours before the start of Open Play are eligible for a full refund. We will offer the available seat to players on our waitlist. Refunds cannot be provided for cancellations made less than 48 hours before the event.

Location & Directions

You’ll find The Pepper Pot inside the historic Ice House Mall in Barrington, Illinois. Public parking is available throughout the property.

The nearest entrance is off Applebee Street, near Jewel-Osco. Enter through the double glass doors beneath the brick arch, then head down the steps or ramp, we’re on the left. You’ll see signage along Lake-Cook Road and inside the building to guide you.

What is Mahjong Open Play?

See You Next Tuesday is The Pepper Pot's weekly Mahjong Open Play event in Barrington, Illinois. Open Play is designed for players who already know the basics of American Mahjong and want a welcoming place to practice, improve their skills, and connect with other Mahjong enthusiasts.

Players of all experience levels are welcome. To participate, you should be able to identify Mahjong tiles by name, understand the basic rules of the game, read the National Mahjong League (NMJL) card, and follow the cadence of play.

Our instructors are available during Open Play to answer questions, provide guidance, and help players gain confidence at the table. However, Open Play is not intended as a beginner Mahjong class. If you are new to Mahjong and have never played before, we recommend starting with our Tile by Tile Mahjong Lessons, where you'll learn the fundamentals of American Mahjong in a supportive classroom setting.

Currently, Mahjong Open Play is held every Tuesday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at The Pepper Pot in Barrington, IL. Do you offer private Mahjong lessons?

Yes! The Pepper Pot offers private American Mahjong lessons for groups of three or more players. Private Mahjong instruction is perfect for friends, family members, social groups, clubs, or anyone looking to learn Mahjong in a more personalized setting.

Private Mahjong lessons can be held at The Pepper Pot in Barrington, Illinois, or at a location of your choice throughout the Chicago area and surrounding suburbs. What should I bring to Mahjong Open Play?

Players should bring their current National Mahjong League (NMJL) card and be ready for an enjoyable afternoon or evening of American Mahjong. All Mahjong tables, tiles, racks, and game supplies are provided by The Pepper Pot.

We recommend bringing reading glasses if you use them, as well as water or any beverage you prefer. Wine is available for purchase on-site by the bottle. If you choose to bring your own wine, a $30 corkage fee applies for any bottles consumed on the premises.

Come with a willingness to learn, practice, and meet fellow Mahjong players. Many participants attend on their own and quickly become part of our welcoming Mahjong community.
